Origin Story

Born from a deep love and respect for coffee cultivation, Bette Buna, was founded in 2020 by husband and wife Dawit and Hester. Their coffee-rooted journey began following the loss of Dawit's grandfather, a seasoned coffee farmer who, alongside his wife Emame, tilled coffee-rich lands in Tefari Kela, Sidama for almost a century. Taking up the reins, Dawit and Hester pledged to carry forward the legacy of their forebears by championing equal opportunities within coffee communities and crafting exceptional coffee.

Today, Bette Buna's presence is seen and felt across the fertile coffee landscapes of Guji, Yirgacheffe, Sidama, and Bench Maji. Not limited to their own farms, they also support allied farmers throughout these regions by sourcing their coffee harvests.

One such treasure comes from Bette Buna's farm in the Megadu district of the Guji zone in Ethiopia. The farm, a verdant expanse spanning 220 hectares, is a living tapestry of semi-forest and wild forest plots, each nurturing coffee plants. The heartbeat of the farm is its dedicated workforce of 850 individuals who painstakingly oversee the harvest, sorting, and processing of each coffee lot. A mixture of full-time and seasonal workers, they're provided not only with a fair wage but also with essentials such as weekly transportation to the secluded farm, accommodation, meals, and satellite education for their children who accompany them during the peak season.

The coffee harvested here undergoes Natural processing. Ripe coffee cherries are plucked by skilful hands from the semi-forest plots, before being placed on elevated drying beds. Over a span of 3-5 weeks, the cherries bask under the sun and repose in the shade in equal measure. Once the desired humidity level is achieved, the dried cherries are allowed to rest in sealed GrainPro bags before they are milled, sorted, and packaged for export at Bette Buna's dry mill.
